JEZ SPINKS gives a rundown on the electric cars that are set to arrive on our shores in 2009.

The models that could be sold here
Holden Volt
GM'S flagship green car will go on sale in Australia in 2012, a year or two after its US debut. The Volt is similar to the Toyota Prius in only one way: it uses both an electric motor and a petrol engine. The Volt's front wheels, however, are only ever powered by electricity. Once the battery runs out of charge, after about 64 kilometres, the petrol engine kicks in to recharge the battery pack and keep the Volt going for about another 400 kilometres.
Holden says: "There's a lot of speculation about what brand that car would be (in Australia) but it will have a lion on the front of it. It's going to be a Holden Volt."
