Most Expensive Car in the World

If your passion for performance and luxury autos cannot be stopped, and your McLaren F1 is becoming a bore with the rest of your exotic cars, it might be time to check out the long awaited Veyron from Bugatti. At around $1.25 million, it is the most expensive car ever made. So what car value do you get for all that money?

First Drive: 2010 Audi A5/S5 Cabriolet

Monte Carlo, Monaco - Spring is just around the corner. It’s the south of France. This must be a convertible launch…
In its bid to become the world’s largest maker of premium automobiles, Audi has shown the motoring press the latest arrows in its burgeoning quiver: the four-seat 2010 A5 and hotter S5 Cabriolet.

Few photos do the new Z justice. But, from a standing perspective, the roof seems thinner, the upper sculpted contours more evident and interesting.

Audi's A7 coupe has broken cover as the Sportback concept at the 2009 Detroit motor show.
Pictures of the new all-wheel-drive Sportback - which is likely to be called the A7 and will sit between the A6 and A8 sedans - show a large four-door sedan that Audi is calling a "coupe-like hatch".
Further evolving the Audi look, the new Audi Sportback Concept is the latest in a line of four-door cars with a more sculptured roof, designed to create a more coupe-like silhouette.
When the Audi Sportback goes on sale in 2010 as the A7 it is expected to in some ways compete with the BMW X6 off-roader and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
Based on the Audi A6 sedan, the Audi A7 will join other four-door 'coupes', such as the upcoming Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera, as alternatives to traditional two-door coupes. Even Lamborghini is working on a four-door, shown as the Estoque concept.
The new A7 is about 1.5cm longer than the A6 wagon, but almost 8cm narrower and lower than the A6 and borrows some styling cues from the Audi A5 coupe.
The front-end of the Sportback has a more squeezed version of Audi's family grille, and the exterior has the LED lights front and rear (like the A5) and 21-inch wheels.
Inside, there is plenty of plush show car leather with traditional woodgrain trim that looks as though it would be home on a luxury boat.
Under the bonnet is a turbocharged, 3.0-litre V6 diesel borrowed from the Audi Q7 soft roader. It delivers 165kW and 550Nm but is matched to a new seven-speed automatic.
Audi claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than seven seconds but with an expected fuel economy of around 6 litres per 100km. The Sportback also has multilink suspension with active dampers (similar to those in the Q7), and ceramic brake discs said to last four times longer than conventional steel discs.

Chrysler’s 200C EV Concept is more than just a glimpse into the brand’s design future.
Penned according to what the company describes as “the new Chrysler DNA”, the mid-size sedan also features the company’s latest advances in petrol-electric hybrid vehicle power as well as leaps forward in driver connectivity.
The Chrsler 200C can even be programmed for novice drivers and warn the owner if they're driving erratically.
The 200C Concept is powered by one of Chrysler’s ENVI range of hybrid engines, which forms part of the company’s broader strategy to roll out petrol-electric and fully electric powerplants across the rest of its model range.
Chrysler describes the 200C Concept as a “range-extended electric vehicle”, denoting an electric motor backed up by a petrol engine. It says the 200C can travel up to 64 kilometres using its 200kW zero emissions electric motor, extending a further 580km with a regular 55kW internal combustion engine.
Chrysler predicts its evolving ENVI technology will result in fully electric, zero-emission motors with a range of up to 320km.
But perhaps the 200C’s most defining characteristic is its breakthrough connectivity, allowing the driver to wire their car into their digital lifestyle, and even to interact with the drivers of other cars.
Chrysler calls the technology “uconnect”, with drivers able to program pre-set seating and temperature settings, download music, access internet radio and receive a personalised welcome and a list of individualised settings on getting into the car.
Parents can place a “teen setting” on the vehicle, limiting its speed and sending them a warning if it is driven erratically or outside a specified range from home.
The 200C also contains a next-generation navigation system with links to street cameras, so that drivers can see what’s happening in real time along their intended route. The car can also anticipate the most fuel-efficient routes and provide recommendations to the driver.

JEZ SPINKS gives a rundown on the electric cars that are set to arrive on our shores in 2009.

Holden Volt
GM'S flagship green car will go on sale in Australia in 2012, a year or two after its US debut. The Volt is similar to the Toyota Prius in only one way: it uses both an electric motor and a petrol engine. The Volt's front wheels, however, are only ever powered by electricity. Once the battery runs out of charge, after about 64 kilometres, the petrol engine kicks in to recharge the battery pack and keep the Volt going for about another 400 kilometres.
Holden says: "There's a lot of speculation about what brand that car would be (in Australia) but it will have a lion on the front of it. It's going to be a Holden Volt."

$47,099Vancouver, British Columbia - Lincoln has gone all-out to make its new full-sized sedan, the MKS, an ultra-modern, high-tech electronic tour de force. It has just about every electronic gadget, gizmo or system you could dream up, and then some. Fortunately, what it doesn’t have is a huge gas-guzzling engine, like big Lincolns of old.
The MKS comes in both front-drive and all-wheel-drive versions and it’s powered by a new and more fuel-efficient 3.7-litre V6 engine that’s unique to Lincoln. It’s a four-valve per cylinder engine with variable valve timing that can deliver 273 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque on regular-grade fuel.
The advanced technology features available in the MKS are impressive. In Canada, most options are assembled in a ($5,000) Vision package that in addition to navigation includes adaptive cruise control, a rear back-up camera and a superb THX II 5.1 surround-sound audio system.

Gaydon, 13.02.08 -- The newly housed Aston Martin Design team has selected a name for the colour of the company’s Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS concept car, after inviting suggestions from the public at the opening of the company’s new Design Studio last year.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS concept
The V12 Vantage RS was unveiled in December by Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, who, during his speech, invited suggestions to name the colour of the concept. The Aston Martin design team was inundated with suggestions, and after careful consideration has selected ‘Mako Blue’ as the name of the concept colour.
Design Director, Marek Reichman said: “The name is taken from the Mako shark, which is the fastest and most agile shark known to man. We thought the name not only reflected the colour, but also that the nature of the shark was synonymous with the character of the car.
“The Maori translation for ‘Mako’ is ‘Blue Lightning’ which obviously is descriptive of both colour and car - a very befitting name.”
Mat Watson, who penned the winning name added: “The name came to me instantly, when I first saw the car. There is a distinct parallel between the shark and the car – both being the fastest of their kind.”
The environmentally sustainable Design Studio is the marque’s first purpose-built and fully-owned design facility. The Vantage RS concept features a 600bhp 6.0 V12 engine and has been subjected to a weight-loss programme. The result is the fastest ever road-going Aston Martin.
Aston Martin is currently evaluating feedback from customers to the Vantage RS concept, with a view to a possible low-volume production run should sufficient demand exist.

2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé: Makes Asian debut at Auto China 2008
A modern grand touring coupé in the finest tradition, this car is powered by the Phantom’s 6.75-litre V12, producing 460hp and 720Nm of torque making it the definitive choice for all-day, long distance driving. With its engine tuned for immense low down torque, the new Rolls-Royce effortlessly achieves the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.8 seconds, and continues rapidly towards an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h.
A combination of segment-leading fuel economy and a 25 percent increase in fuel capacity, compared to the Drophead Coupé, increases driving range to more than 600 kilometres. A spacious picnic boot with split tail compartment gives easy access to 395 litres of space. The lower part of the tailgate provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered.
The highly advanced spaceframe aluminium chassis endows the Coupé with the marque’s legendary ride comfort, handling and safety. It is the most torsionally rigid Rolls-Royce ever built. The unique architecture of the car is further augmented by the rear-hinged coach doors, allowing the easiest possible access to the rear lounge seat.
To ensure a perfect balance of refinement and driver involvement, Rolls-Royce developed a new gearbox programme, stiffer rear dampers and modified spring rates. In addition, a thicker rear anti-roll bar, modified brake response and tuned steering offer more feel over other Phantom models.
As with every Rolls-Royce car, the finely hand-crafted interior of the Coupé can be personalised via the Bespoke programme, allowing for any number of features, each tailored to the taste of the individual. For example, customers can choose from more than 44,000 different colours.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé’s cabin can be ordered with an optional, full-length starlight headlining, incorporating 1600 tiny fibre optics to create the ambience of a star-filled night sky. The new model is also available with a brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar surround previously seen on its experimental predecessor, the 101EX.
This was the first time that Rolls-Royce has exhibited the complete Phantom Series at an Asian motor show. Specially commissioned for Auto China 2008, Bespoke versions of the Phantom Extended Wheel Base and the Phantom Drophead Coupé will be on display.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman, Ian Robertson, said, “We regard Auto China as the natural platform for the Asian launch of the new Phantom Coupé and our showcase of specially commissioned cars. China, our largest market in the Asia Pacific region and the third largest in the world, saw record sales in 2007 with growth of more than 50 per cent and we expect to see continued success in this market.”

Speed-obsessed drivers used to have to shell out big bucks for high performance. Want to go zero to 60 mph in 2.46 seconds? That'll be $1.5 million for a Bugatti Veyron, please.
Today, however, consumers see speed as more of a right than a privilege. Many automakers agree and, while they're not delivering the same sort of performance as one finds in the Veyron, several models can get to 60 nearly as fast--without costing more than $100,000.

www.smh.com.au/news/executive-style/motors/nip-tuck-sharpens-roadster/2009/01/15/1231608855879.html

Andrew Heasley encounters a driver's car for the caffe latte strip.
The car that re-introduced the folding hard-top to open motoring for a new generation, the Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster, has had a nip and tuck to keep it looking glamorous as it passes the halfway mark. We're testing the $123,686 SLK350 Designo, the mid-level car with a restyled interior using premium leathers and wood trims. The test car had options including a $2648 AMG body kit and a $3177 sports package, bringing the price to $136,422.
WHAT YOU GETTwo seats only for starters, fitted with the Airscarf neck warmers. Beyond that, there's the trick folding roof, which opens and closes in 20seconds with Swiss-watch precision at the push of a button. The interior gets light bone-coloured leather and suede on seats and door trims and a matching two-tone dashboard (black over cream) while burr walnut veneer appears as fillets in the dash and on door and handbrake handles. The combination looks better than it sounds. There's graphite grey 17-inch alloys, restyled bi-xenon lights, a premium Harman Kardon stereo and integrated mobile phone set-up.
HOW SAFEGets four stars from NCAP in crash tests. Also has four airbags, anti-lock brakes with traction/stability control. Permanent roll-over hoops sit behind head rests.
WHAT'S INSIDESports seats are thin but firm and give good support. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and height and has paddle gear shifters. An integrated stereo/satnav/phone system gets iPod connectivity. Two cupholders and just a narrow well in the centre console bin. Everything is electrically operated.
UNDER THE BONNETThe 3.5-litre V6 (200kW/350Nm) soldiers on, allied to a magnificent seven-speed intelligent auto that is the star here. The engine sounds raspy over 5000rpm, so you might as well flick the paddle box up and down to keep the engine in happier, lower revs. Torque comes on strong, the gear shifts are as silky as they come. Fuel consumption is a mixed bag: we picked up the car with a reading of 15.9L/100km; after our time we finished at 9.9L, which is reasonably good for a sports car. Mostly the trip computer read around the 10.5L/100km, above the official consumption figure of 9.2L.
ON THE ROADThe previous iteration, except when fed steroids by AMG, tended to look a bit dainty on the road. This makeover gives the car a more commanding presence. The car is docile in traffic but plant the foot and there's a sudden surge in momentum. Push the "sport" button and the throttle response is even sharper. The steering seems more assisted than we recall. It provides a wide degree of road wheel angle for very little steering wheel twirl. So in sharp corners, until you adjust, you tend to steer too far into them. The weighting through the steering wheel is nicely solid, though there's always the feeling there's a big servo motor turning those wheels. The brakes pull up strongly with good initial bite. The ride is firm though it won't upset passengers - which is at least half its raison d'etre: this is a car as much to drive as to be seen in.
VERDICTFor some, the thought of a twisting ribbon of tarmac in the mountains on a sunny morning and a downpour in the afternoon will help make the decision to go for a folding hard top convertible that also happens to be pretty capable through the bends. For others - and I suspect for those wanting the "Designo" pack, it's all about the look - it's cruising slowly past the cafe strip with the roof down and Ministry of Sound drifting from the cabin. For that it will admirably fill the role.

Barry ParkFebruary 7, 2009
BANKERS might be bleeding but that hasn't stopped Aston Martin releasing a sneak preview of the production version (above) of the four-door Rapide executive express ahead of its Geneva motor show launch.
The computer-generated images show a few more tweaks have improved the 2006 concept car's design on its way to being a real model. Sure, the windscreen stands more upright on the production car, the air intakes on either side of the shark-mouth air dam are missing, the headlights look more angular and the wing mirrors have more than doubled in size but the production reality is faithful to the show-car hype. Think of it as a Lear jet without wings.
They've kept the glass roof and added a few visual improvements - more prominent ribs on the lower air dam and the chrome, jewelled repeater lamp that splits the vent on the front fender now runs all the way down to the rear door.
The likely candidate for powering the Rapide is a tuned version of Aston's 350kW 6.0-litre V12 used in the DB9 two-seater coupe. The same engine also powers the more potent DBS but it turns out 380kW.
Marcel Fabris, Aston's Australian regional manager, said the Rapide's price should sit between the DB9 and DBS, in the range of $400,000.
He said about 20 customers had already laid down a deposit, despite knowing the first cars wouldn't make it to our shores until early next year.
And who will buy it? Fabris said the Rapide's four-door layout (the DB9 and DBS both have a 2+2 seating option but rear-seat space can be limited) made it a much more practical car than existing models in the Aston range. This will suit families or perhaps the couple that wants to travel to the opera with friends.
The Rapide will debut at Geneva alongside the V12 Vantage, the fastest model in the company's 95-year history. -- BARRY PARK

Rolls-Royce 200EX concept previews British luxury marque's new BMW 7-Series-based RR4 limo that will sit beneath the $1m-plus Phantom.
Is this the perfect car for billionaires downsizing? The pinnacle of motoring snobbery, Rolls-Royce, has released pictures of a baby Rolls that will hit the road next year.
Rolls-Royce says it's not a concept car but an "experimental model", which means that unlike a concept vehicle the 200EX is driveable and a forerunner to an imminent production car that will then be known as the RR4.
You could argue the timing isn't ideal to release a V12 limousine that is likely to set buyers back more than $700,000. But local Rolls-Royce boss Bevin Clayton says the timing is "perfect". The car is due to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of next year and already the company has taken 16 orders. Given Rolls-Royce sold just 18 cars last year, it's a fairly healthy order book.
"I only wish I could have some in the next few months," Clayton says. He says sales are beginning to pick up for the brand this year after a horror end to last year, caused by the economic downturn and the increase in the luxury car tax.
The tax added about $85,000 to the price of a Phantom, the million-dollar-plus car that effectively relaunched the Rolls-Royce brand and defined the current styling trend that has continued with the 200EX. The Trivett Group, which distributes Rolls-Royce in Australia, famously sold eight cars inJune last year, freighting them by plane to beat the tax rise.
The new baby Rolls-Royce is designed to put a modern slant on the brand, mixing fine wood, wool and leather with state-of-the-art technology such as a fighter jet-style head-up display.
However, the company says the car will be recognisable as a Rolls, with the long bonnet, a modern interpretation of the trademark grille and "Spirit of Ecstasy" bonnet ornament

www.canadiandriver.com/2009/03/10/first-drive-2009-maserati-quattroporte-sport-gt-s.htm

Modena, Italy - The Italians know a thing or two about passion. A glass of fine barolo paired with a plate of pasta putanesca (supposedly used by “ladies of the evening” to lure potential customers) will quickly convince one of that. And don’t even think about arguing with an Italian woman.
Then there are the cars. We all know Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo et al have created some of the most achingly desirable exotics extant. But what about the four-door premium sport sedan?
The Pininfarina-penned Maserati Quattroporte (even “four doors” sounds alluring in Italian) proves the large luxury sedan need not be stoic, imposing or contentious. How about bold, curvaceous and enduringly beautiful? If Sophia Loren were a car…
Launched in 2003, and first sold in Canada in 2005, this looker initially had a few issues. The ride was flinty, the dry sump Ferrari-sourced 400-horsepower 4.2-litre V8 was too rorty, and the rear-mounted F1-style six-speed shifted harshly. Not exactly what most buyers of this class of car were looking for; so Maserati has been gradually teaching the Quattroporte a few manners.
The V8 went from dry sump to wet sump, and the racy transaxle was replaced with a six-speed auto bolted to the engine (a collaboration of Maserati and German tranny specialist ZF). An optional “Skyhook” active damper system smoothed out the ride.
Now the folks at Maserati have decided it’s high time to inject some extra “passione” into their flagship sedan. Topping out the 2009 range is the $179,900 Quattroporte Sport GT S, a harder-edged version of the $169,900 4.7-litre Quattroporte S that was introduced last year. It gets a 12-horsepower boost, to 433 hp at 7000 r.p.m. (torque remains 361 lb.-ft. at 4750 r.p.m.), modified ZF six-speed auto operated by larger paddle shifters, 20-inch alloys, and heavily revised underpinnings. The zero-to-100 km/h dash drops by 0.3 seconds to 5.1.
With the Sport GT S, Maserati isn’t gunning for the mega-horsepower bahn-stormers like Mercedes’ AMG products. It’s targeting drivers who would prefer to jump off the autostrada and take a more sinuous route to their destination.
And so I found myself doing just that, leaving the arterial A14 in northern Italy and heading east over a series of wonderfully challenging roads that cut through small villages and endless vineyards.
